"Do I really need to be sitting?" I asked putting up the first line of defense, waiting for the news. "I think it is best that you are", he said leaning heavily upon the door frame of our bedroom. "I have something to tell you that will affect our marriage..." "Well?" I eeked out, swallowing hard, remembering our ‘decade of marriage celebration' just a few short months before, hoping against hope that it hadn't been in vain. "Last night..." "Yes..." "Well Last night... I joined Facebook" he admitted completely ashamed and remorseful. "What? How is that possible?" I asked - the shock and anger rising inside me, until it bubbled over. "It is one thing for the average Joe to join the social networking craze, but it is a completely different matter for the single most vocal critic of Facebook, Twitter and MySpace to join its beloved ranks! When I think about the countless times you peered over my shoulder, jeering at me as I Facebooked... When I recall the snide comments from the corner of the room, while I connected with friends from high school and college via the social network...Well, I just don't know what to think!" "I know, I know... I was weak!" he started explaining, "I was at work and everyone was talking about Facebook and then we started looking at pictures of Brian's new dog and Jeff's new motorcycle and then they showed me ‘Mafia Wars'...and... and, I couldn't help myself!" "Enough!" I said, "I'm late for work, but this conversation is not over!" With that, I grabbed my purse, skipped breakfast and headed for the door in a complete daze from the shocking news. My whole world turning upside down, the Man I thought I knew becoming a distant memory in the recesses of my mind. I zoned out the entire way to work, things didn't make sense anymore. The man I thought I had married was your typical cop, leery of divulging any personal information to strangers let alone releasing it upon the World Wide Web regardless of whether or not they had to be a friend to see it... and now this, it was unthinkable, he would never do such a thing! He embodied everything resistant to social networking... He had served in the gulf war... He has prodded, condemned and teased my social networking every step of the way... And now, the unthinkable... he's joined Facebook...when did the world go crazy! As I logged into to my work computer that day, my social networking dashboard lit up with the friend request. It appeared he had taken the first step towards reconciliation. Reluctantly I accepted, but in a strategic move, I posted a sarcastic status update welcoming the most vocal critic of Facebook to the social network. Then a funny thing happened, throughout the day, I received dozens of wall posts with similar stories. It seemed everyone knew someone who fell prey to Facebook after resisting for as long as they could. Sooner or later curiosity wins out and even diehard critics and war hardened police officers join its ranks. So in conclusion, this is what I've learned... Forgive past offensives, rude and derogatory comments made in ignorance. They are made by the uninitiated, simply because they do not know any better. They do not know how addicting Facebook is and how it will eventually change the way the world communicates. In the words of the Borg, "Resistance if Futile..." So why not embrace it! |
