Last week I traveled to New York City for a web development conference. The conference was great and so was the trip. New York offers so much variety in food, culture and fun that I couldn't pass up a chance to write about some of the highlights of my little "working vacation". If you ever get the chance to go to NYC, here is my recommended list of what TO DO and what NOT TO DO...
Top Five Things to Do in New York City
1. Katz Deli. Try the pastrami, enough said! 2. Go to Macy's on 34th Street. It is a block long and fabulous and this is where they filmed my very favorite Christmas movie! (Maybe not miraculous, but definitely worth the visit.) 3. See a show on Broadway. Chicago was awesome this time around! (Yes.. I saw Chicago in New York!) 4. Visit ground zero and see the progress being made on the Freedom Tower. It is a way to celebrate the resilience of the American people. 5. Take a bus tour of the city. It's the best way to maximize your touring when your time is limited. You'll see the city's sights while sitting on the top level of an open-air bus and enjoy an informative narrative along the way. Busses run both day and night.
Top Five Things Not to Do In New York
1. Don't ride in a cab! New York cabbies are CRAZY! Instead try to walk to your destination and enjoy the city and it's personality along the way! 2. Don't buy a purse from a back alley in Chinatown. It is dangerous and scary! But if you can't resist, make sure you haggle them down to a good price. After all, you should have something to brag about after assuming all the risks. 3. Don't be a target. Do...be aware of your surroundings at all times. It is easy to spot tourists and unfortunately, that may make you vulnerable. 4. Don't go to a Starbucks. They may be on every corner, but so are some amazing local coffee shops and delis with lots of wonderful choices. ...You'll thank me for this one. 5. OK... maybe this is a stretch for the "Don't" list but here goes anyway... Don't forget to buy an Love New York t-shirt, after all, they're cheap! Like... six for $10 from most any street vendor. And who doesn't love New York? ...might as well advertise it with a t-shirt, right?
If you're planning a trip to New York, whether it's work or pleasure, I think you'll love it. New York is a great place especially if you have the added advantage of a local to show you all the "ins and outs."
